WVU Extension Specialist –
For 35 years, Elaine Bowen has been teaching West Virginians healthy habits to increase wellness. Her goal is to improve the lives of people from all walks of life. She has planned, taught and helped obtain funding for innovative programs that have dramatically changed how both youths and adults approach their health.
Bowen, a WVU Extension professor and the specialist for health promotion, has worked on health education at both the county and state level. She has taken a leadership role in a variety of programs that have raised awareness about common health issues like heart disease, obesity, dental problems and inactivity.
Bowen is the director of outreach for the WVU National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, a prestigious teaching, research and clinical education institution that is one of only 20 of its kind in the country.
Along with major programs focused on women’s wellness and heart health, Bowen oversees the 4-H Health Initiative, which works to increase health knowledge and positive behavior changes among youths and their families.
Bowen also leads WVU Extension’s Love Your Heart program, which encourages women to learn more about heart disease. The program features woman-to-woman informal talks that educate and promote awareness about how women can live heart-healthy.
Her determination to improve lives drives her search for relevant grants to support health programs. She helped obtain more than 30 grants and contracts for health programs in West Virginia.
Bowen’s leadership roles also have included various administrative positions within WVU Extension.
She has won a plethora of local, state and national awards for her work, including the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Continued Excellence Award and the WVU Extension Service Heebink Award for Service to the State of West Virginia.
Bowen received her bachelor’s degree in home economics education and extension from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). She later received two degrees from WVU: a master’s in family resources and a doctorate in educational leadership.
She is a licensed dietitian and certified family and consumer science professional.
