John Porter John Porter

WVU Extension Agent –
Agriculture & Natural Resources, Kanawha County

John Porter is the WVU Extension agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Kanawha County. His expertise in community gardens and passion for locally grown foods has led to the on-going creation of two county associations.

Porter played an instrumental role in developing, and later expanding, the the award winning “Family Fun Days at the Market” program.

His work in community gardens is often driven by his desire to see West Virginians support locally grown produce. He has helped establish or support seven community school gardens, several of which grow the produce for distribution to needy families.

Porter received his bachelor’s degree from Marshall University in botany, and his master’s degree from West Virginia University in horticultural sciences.

He is the coordinator for the Kanawha County Master Gardener Program and assisted with the International Master Gardener Conference, which took place in Charleston in October 2011.

His past work experience includes serving as an AmeriCorps Vista Member and as a research assistant for the WVU Davis College’s Division of Plant and Soil Sciences.

Porter is a past member of the American Community Gardening Association and a current member of the American Horticulture Society.
